I had been a Pediatric Occupational Therapist for over 20 years when I was faced with the biggest challenge of my adult life; having a child with special needs.
I had 3 healthy sons when my daughter was born. When I carried her upstairs, she felt like a sack of potatoes. When I dangled a toy overhead as we played, she cried. I knew something wasn’t right, but I didn’t know what to do.
I was frantic as I searched for ways to handle all the unexpected parenting challenges. As an OT, I recognized that there were physical issues. As a mother, however, I wasn’t prepared for the barrage of emotions that came with this uncharted territory. I felt scared, panicked, confused and completely overwhelmed. I would have welcomed support and guidance.
Parents of special needs children are often left on their own as they try to navigate the day-to-day complexities of raising their child.
